    Program Overview

    This one-year fellowship is designed to develop core competencies in managing acute and life-threatening conditions in children. It combines pediatric emergency medicine theory with practical clinical skills and simulation training to prepare physicians for high-pressure, real-time decision-making in pediatric emergency departments.


    Course Curriculum (12 Modules, 12 Months)

    Module 1: Foundations of Pediatric Emergency Medicine

    • Emergency department triage and pediatric assessment triangle

    • ABCDE approach and primary/secondary survey

    • Vital sign interpretation across pediatric age groups

    • Pediatric life support protocols (PALS, BLS)

    Module 2: Pediatric Airway and Respiratory Emergencies

    • Recognition and management of upper and lower airway obstruction

    • Pediatric asthma, bronchiolitis, croup, and pneumonia

    • Non-invasive and invasive airway management

    • Oxygen therapy and nebulization techniques

    Module 3: Cardiovascular Emergencies

    • Shock types in children: hypovolemic, septic, cardiogenic

    • Cardiac arrest and resuscitation protocols

    • Management of arrhythmias and congenital cardiac conditions

    • Use of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) for cardiac assessment

    Module 4: Neurological and Seizure Emergencies

    • Status epilepticus: protocol-based management

    • Febrile seizures and differential diagnosis

    • Head trauma and raised intracranial pressure

    • Acute encephalopathy and toxic-metabolic encephalopathy

    Module 5: Trauma and Injury Management in Children

    • Pediatric trauma evaluation and ATLS guidelines

    • Blunt vs penetrating trauma: head, chest, abdomen, extremities

    • Fracture stabilization, splinting, and wound care

    • Pediatric burn management and fluid resuscitation

    Module 6: Poisoning, Toxins, and Environmental Emergencies

    • Common pediatric poisonings (medications, household chemicals, plants)

    • Activated charcoal, antidotes, and decontamination

    • Snake bites, scorpion stings, and insect bites

    • Heatstroke, hypothermia, and drowning

    Module 7: Infectious Diseases and Sepsis in Pediatric ER

    • Febrile child evaluation by age group

    • Early recognition and management of pediatric sepsis

    • Meningitis, encephalitis, and tropical infections (Dengue, Malaria)

    • Rapid initiation of antimicrobial therapy and source control

    Module 8: Gastrointestinal and Metabolic Emergencies

    • Acute abdomen and GI bleeding

    • Dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and acid-base disorders

    • Diabetic ketoacidosis and hypoglycemia

    • Inborn errors of metabolism presenting in ER

    Module 9: Pediatric Orthopedic and Surgical Emergencies

    • Acute limp, septic arthritis, and osteomyelitis

    • Testicular torsion, intussusception, hernia

    • Emergency imaging: X-ray, USG, CT basics

    • When to refer for surgical consultation

    Module 10: Neonatal Emergencies

    • Respiratory distress, sepsis, hypoglycemia in neonates

    • Neonatal seizures and temperature regulation

    • Safe transport and stabilization of critically ill neonates

    • Congenital anomalies presenting in ER

    Module 11: Psychosocial, Legal, and Ethical Aspects

    • Child abuse recognition and reporting

    • Mental health crises and suicide prevention

    • Communication with anxious parents/guardians

    • Medico-legal documentation and consent

    Module 12: Simulation, Research, and Quality Improvement

    • Pediatric code blue simulations and mock drills

    • Emergency department process improvement

    Clinical Training and Hands-On Experience
